Grammatik & Wortschatz
Ziel 1. Modal verbs in the present and the simple past tenses.
  1. Hyde Flippo's "German for Beginners" lesson on modals includes a quiz. Click through all the parts of the lesson.
  2. Read "Simple Past of haben, sein and modals." Do the exercise linked to the page.
  3. Microsoft Word handout to review present tense of modals, separable prefix verbs and imperative mood of verbs.

Advanced lessons on modals:

  1. Deutschkurs lesson on modal verbs with exercises (includes sound files). You will probably want to do most of these exercises when you learn the subjunctive (Lektion 9 & Lektion 11).
  2. languages website page on the modals provides a good summary and will probably be useful as you continue to learn the verb tenses.
  3. This site includes a quiz but it includes several tenses and moods. Try it and begin to develop a feel for the various uses of the modals.

Ziel 4. Wortschatz: Gesundheit & Körper, Körperpflege
  1. YouTube video with images and vocabulary for the body.
  2. "German for Beginners" includes a vocabulary list and exercises.
  3. Here are vocabulary drills from For this lesson, click on "The Human Body" and set up the exercise appropriately.
  4. "Gesundheit." There are many exercises here; work through as many as you like until you can name all the major parts of your body and are able to talk about common health issues.
  5. Study the handout (Microsoft Word) on Körper und Körperpflege.
  6. Here's a video by "woltersworld" on YouTube that teaches German phrases important for asking for help if you become ill. 
Ziel 5. Sprechen: Dialog 3
  1. Use this dialogue for speaking practice and for review of material already covered.
  2. Print out Dialog 3 (Microsoft Word document). Practice the dialogue aloud several times. Take note of the uses of the dative case and of the two-way prepositions.
  3. Do all the exercises included with the dialogue.
  4. Make up your own shopping dialogue. Use the vocabulary included to change items purchased, their colors, fabrics, patterns, etc.

  • Click on the song title and read the lyrics while listening to the song once or twice.
  • Click here for an exercise focusing on the use of reflexive constructions in the song. Do this exercise and do your best to figure out the meaning of the lyrics.
  • When you have given it your best shot, check your comprehension here.
  • Listen to the version you like as often as you can manage. Read along with the lyrics until you can understand the words when you hear the song, even without a text.

Was machen Sie, wenn Sie krank sind, um sich zu erholen?

Ich bin gottseidank nur selten krank. Manchmal erkälte ich mich oder ich habe die Grippe. Ich huste viel, schnupfe, niese, habe Fieber, Muskelnschmerzen, Halsschmerzen, und manchmal sogar Magenschmerzen. Ich lege mich ins Bett hin, nehme Aspirin, trinke Tee, und schlafe viel. Wenn ich kann, lese ich. Wenn ich so krank bin, dass ich nicht lesen kann, geht das mir sehr auf die Nerven. Ich muß mich einfach ausruhen und warten, bis ich mich besser fühle. Gewöhnlicherweise erhole ich mich schnell. Dann muß ich mich anziehen und wieder an die Arbeit gehen. (100 Wörter)
